Shepard Stormwater Diversion

The Shepard Stormwater Diversion project will address stormwater quality and quantity issues in the Western Irrigation District (WID) system. Much of East Calgary presently drains to the Alberta Environment Headworks (AENV), Western Headworks (WH) Canal and then into the Western Irrigation District.
During major storm events, the Shepard Stormwater Diversion Project will divert water from the WH Canal to the Bow River by way of a 3.5 km drainage channel, a 155 hectare constructed treatment wetland, and a 9.5 km ditch and discharge structure.
The presentation prior to the tour will provide background on the project, benefits provided by the project, and illustrate the construction sequence.

Pine Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant

The City of Calgary’s newest wastewater treatment plant, with a nominal capacity of 100 ML/d, is now fully commissioned and is undergoing fine tuning. This BNR plant, complete with tertiary filtration, is producing an extremely high quality effluent.
The project has received several awards and accolades, including:

  • APEGGA Summit Award – Project Achievement
  • Consulting Engineers of Alberta – Award of Excellence: Sustainable Design
  • Consulting Engineers of Alberta – Award of Excellence: Project Management
  • Canada Green Building Council – LEED Gold (OM&A Building)

Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant

The Bearspaw and Glenmore Water Treatment Plants are currently under going major upgrades to address the following:

  • More stringent water quality regulatory standards
  • Site safety and environmental stewardship
  • Increased water demand in a growing city
The plants upgrade program, which started in 2003, will include: High-rate Ballasted Flocculation Pretreatment, Residuals Management, On-site Sodium Hypochlorite Generation, Ultra Violet (UV) Disinfection and Filter Upgrades.
The completed projects at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant include:
  • Actiflo Ballasted Flocculation Pretreatment
  • Residuals Treatment Facility
